Kathy Griffin Suffers Heartbreaking Loss, Announces Death of Her Mother On Social Media

Kathy Griffin just took to social media and announced that her mother, who was suffering from dementia, has passed away.

“I am gutted. My best friend. I’m shaking. I won’t ever be prepared. I’m so grateful you guys got to be part of her life,” Kathy said announcing the news.

“You knew her. You loved her. She knew it. Oh, and OF COURSE she went on St Patrick’s Day,” she added.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Maggie Griffin, the mother of Kathy Griffin and co-star of the comedian’s Bravo reality series Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, has died at age 99.

Kathy tweeted the news on Tuesday night, writing a tribute beside a picture of herself with her mother enjoying a beautiful view.

“My Mom, the one and only, Maggie Griffin, passed away today,” Kathy, 59, wrote in her post on social media. “I am gutted. My best friend. I’m shaking. I won’t ever be prepared. I’m so grateful you guys got to be part of her life. You knew her. You loved her. She knew it. Oh, and OF COURSE she went on St Patrick’s Day.”

In January 2019, Kathy revealed that her mother was suffering from dementia. “This is never easy for a child,” the comedian wrote at the time. “I know this is a reality that millions of people deal with every year. But when it comes to my mom this is particularly hard because her sharp mind was everything.” Going on to say that her mom had “rapidly fallen into the throes of dementia,” Kathy wrote that she had not had a proper, coherent conversation with her in some time.

Maggie was born in 1920 in Chicago, Illinois. She was a hospital administrator who became involved in her daughter’s career in 2001 with Kathy’s So-Called Reality. In 2005, she began appearing as herself in Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, going on to do six seasons. Later on, she made appearances on talk show Kathy and documentary Kathy Griffin: A Hell of a Story.

“When people feel like they know my mom, I always respond, ‘you do!’” wrote Kathy in a Twitter thread at the time of revealing Maggie’s dementia diagnosis. “She never put on a show, she was the show.”
